FORT FRANCES - All three of the collisions happened between the hours of 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Luckily, the drivers were not injured.

Members of the Rainy River District community are reminded that attentive driving is crucial in areas with lots of wildlife.

Here's what you can do to stay safe:

  • Scan the road ahead from shoulder to shoulder. Watch for shining eyes at the roadside. If you do see shining eyes, slow down and be ready to stop.
  • If possible, avoid driving from dusk to dawn, when animals are most active.
  • Travel at a safe speed and stay alert. Driver inattention and speed are common factors in animal-vehicle crashes.
  • If you see an animal on or near the road, slow down and pass carefully as they may suddenly bolt onto the road. Slow down and sound your horn. Don't try to drive around the animal. Animal movements are unpredictable.
  • If you hit a deer or moose, report it to the police. Do not try to move an injured animal.
