RED LAKE — A touring ballet group brought their show to Red Lake.

The Red Lake Wilderness Entertainment Series hosted a performance by Ballet Kelowna at the Red Lake District High School on Tuesday night, with more than 175 people in attendance.

Ballet Kelowna, a professional dance troupe based in British Columbia, received funding from the Ontario Arts Council to bring their show to Northern Ontario, with other performances taking place in Sioux Lookout and Dryden. The group brought their own spring floor, which took two days to set up.

“It was really well received, everyone loved it, adults and the kids,” Wilderness Entertainment board chair Angela Bishop said.

The Red Lake Wilderness Entertainment Series is a local group that brings performance arts shows to the Red Lake area. They strive to bring in a variety of different types of shows, primarily music and theatre shows. This year the group held eight shows.

For this show, the group reached out to the local dance studios to invite them, and sold tickets at a discounted $5 for children.

“It's really important for kids to see the performance arts,” says Bishop.

The Wilderness Entertainment group’s next show will feature Amanda Rheaume in January. She is a contemporary folk musician, who uses her music to express her Métis and 2SLGBTQ+ identity.
