HALIFAX – Sandy Lake First Nation-born musician Aysanabee cleaned up at Sunday night’s Juno Awards in Halifax.

The artist was named songwriter of the year for Here and Now and Somebody Else and captured the alternative album of the year title for Here and Now.

The wins marked the first time an Indigenous artist won in either category.

“I grew up in a trailer in Northern Ontario without electricity and running water and now I’m here,” Aysanabee, who was raised in Kaministiquia, said in his acceptance speech for songwriter of the year at the Juno Awards.
