FORT FRANCES — The OPP arrested the driver of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) last Saturday on impaired driving and trafficking charges.
A 54-year-old from Seine River was observed operating an ATV with another helmetless rider in the Christie Avenue North area of Fort Frances at roughly 5 p.m., according to the police, in a media release.
After the officer stopped the ATV, they allegedly determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol and arrested him at the scene.
Additionally, the police said, that the officer searched the driver and found a large quantity of suspected percocet.
The OPP transported the driver to the detachment for further investigation and breath testing.
The police charged the driver with impaired operation by alcohol or drug, failure or refusal to provide a breath sample and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
The OPP also suspended the driver’s licence for 90 days and impounded the ATV for seven days.
The police released the accused, who is scheduled to have a first appearance in the Fort Frances Ontario Court of Justice in May.
The OPP said that it remains committed to taking alcohol and drug-impaired drivers off the roads through enforcement and public education.
If residents suspect that someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, the police added that it is important to call 911 to report it, as road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
It is Newswatch policy not to name people facing criminal accusations when we are unlikely to follow the case to its conclusion in the courts.
