Arrest made in First Nation for aggravated assault

KINGFISHER LAKE FIRST NATION – The Ontario Provincial Police are assisting the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service with an assault investigation that left one individual with life-threatening injuries.

Last Monday, NAPS officers received information about an assault that took place at a residence within the territory of Kingfisher Lake First Nation.

The individual sustained serious and life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by air ambulance for medical treatment.

On Tuesday, due to the nature of the victim's injuries, NAPS requested the assistance of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

On Thursday, NAPS officers arrested and charged an 18-year-old from Kingfisher Lake First Nation with Aggravated Assault - contrary to Section 268(1) of the Criminal Code and Escape Lawful Custody - contrary to Section 145(1) of the Criminal Code

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on June 3.

NAPS is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the OPP Major Case Investigation Team, Regional Support Team, and the Provincial Liaison Team.
