THUNDER BAY – An American angler has pleaded guilty after being found with 34 walleye over his limit.

Larry Maples, from Beaver Dam, Ky., was also convicted of possessing fish packaged in a manner that it couldn’t be easily counted.

Maples was fined $6.700 and is prohibited from possessing a fishing licence or engaging in any fishing activities in Ontario for six years.

According to a government of Ontario release, conservation officers on June 15, 2024 were conducting fish and wildlife inspections at the Pigeon River border when Maples was pulled over following a fishing trip on Greystone Lake, near Ignace.

A cooler containing 21 bags of frozen, skinless fish was found and officers determined Maples was over his walleye limit.

The case was heard in court this past April and a release was issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources earlier this week.
