UPDATE: Accused charged with arson, assaulting police officer

NIGIGOONSIMINIKAANING FIRST NATION -One person faces several charges after allegedly setting an intentional fire, and then injuring a responding police officer.

The Treaty Three Police Service, along with OPP, responded Monday evening to a structural fire that had been intentionally set.

The accused was found barricaded in a nearby residence. While the responding officers attempted to make commands to have the suspect surrender, a Treaty Three Police Service officer was struck by a sharp-edged object and was taken to hospital. The officer was treated in hospital and is in stable condition.

Police said a conducted energy weapon was also used, but it was not successful. The suspect later surrendered and was arrested.

The accused remains in custody and is charged with arson, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, aggravated assault of a peace officer, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief under $5,000, and resisting a peace officer.
