The Seven Generations Education Institute is offering an eight-week workshop to help unemployed people get back into the workforce.
“It’s a nice bridging program for students who might not have their Grade 12 or who have been out of the workforce, [for a while]” said Rachael Wolfe, the program manager for training for employment programs at Seven Generations.
She said the program runs full-time five days a week and covers a range of topics certification for topics like first aid and CPR level C, workplace hazardous materials information system (WHIMIS), and worker health and safety.
“It really gives them, a really nice advantage going back into the workforce with all their certificates.... They’re brushing up on all those skills and they are redoing their resume. Interview preparation, cover letters, [etc],” Wolfe said.
This is the second time that Seven Generations is offering this course in-person, with the first session just finishing up on Friday. Wolfe said that participants who have finished the program have enjoyed it. She said one of the students who is finishing up this session will start a work placement and will return to post-secondary schooling in the new year.
There are additional perks to taking the program. Wolfe said some students between the ages of 18 and 30 may be eligible for a wage allowance for attending the course.
Wolfe said there is no tuition cost for the program and anyone can attend, however students can’t be working full-time or be enrolled in any other training program and the program can’t take full-time high school students. Those under 18 are can take part as long as they have an exemption from attending school.
“Maybe you’re not ready to go back to work. But you do want to get out and do something,” she said. “This is a great opportunity.”
