ATIKOKAN — A man faces multiple criminal charges, including dangerous driving and impaired driving, after an incident Wednesday afternoon in Atikokan.

Police said a member of the Atikokan Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment Board received a 911 call from a concerned driver at 12 p.m. on Wednesday reporting a possible impaired driver on Highway 11 near Flanders Road.

Officers located and stopped the vehicle just outside of Atikokan.

Upon stopping the vehicle, police said they determined the driver had been consuming alcohol and demanded a roadside sobriety test.

The driver failed the test, was arrested and transported to the Atikokan Detachment, where additional breath testing was completed, according to police.

The 27-year-old from Fort Frances, was charged with one count of impaired operation alcohol/drug, and one count of impaired operation with a blood-alcohol concentration above the limit of 80 mg per 100 mL.

The accused driver's licence was suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The Ontario Provincial Police have released the accused, and a first appearance is scheduled in the Atikokan Ontario Court of Justice for August 28, 2025.

The Atikokan Police Department is also reminding community members of the 2025 Civic Day Long Weekend Traffic Campaign taking place from August 1 to 4.

The initiative is designed to increase public compliance with safe driving measures and save lives, focusing on impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving, and seatbelt offences.
